Selections to University based on Z-score – District and Merit quotas

After checking your GCE A/L results now your next questions are

When you check your A/L results you will also get Z-score value, Island Rank (IR) for your stream and District Rank (DR). Your University selection will be based on your results, Z score, Island Rank and District Rank for particular stream (Bio Science/ Medicine, Physical Science/ Engineering, Management, Arts or Technology).

UGC Policy on University Admissions

Sri Lankan University admission is based on Z-score values and students are selected based on merit and district quota.

For students seeking admission to Arts courses all Island Merit is the main criterion used for selection. The district basis is not used for selection of students in this category.

Selection to all other streams, namely Commerce, Biological Science, Physical Science, and the newly introduced Engineering Technology Stream, and Bio-systems Technology Stream is based on the following criteria.

  1. Merit 40% 

Up to 40% of the available places of a particular course of study is selected on the order of Z-scores ranked on All Island Merit .

  1. District Quota 55%

Of the remaining 60%, up to 55% is selected on the district quota system. The district quota system is that, for a given district, in addition to the number selected under the all island merit (up to 40%), additional seats are made available up to the remaining 55%. Accordingly, upto 55% of the available places in each course of study will be allocated to the 25 administrative districts in proportion to the total population of each district; that is on the ratio of the population of the district concerned to the total population of the country.

  1. Educationally disadvantaged district quota 5%

In addition, there are 16 districts, recognized and classified as educationally disadvantaged districts. The remaining 5% of the total available seats are given to the students of these districts.

The 16 districts categorized as ‘educationally disadvantaged’ are,

1.Nuwara Eliya. 2. Hambantota, 3. Jaffna 4. Kilinochchi 5. Mullathivu, 6. Mullaitivu 7. Vavuniya 8. Trincomalee 9. Batticaloa 10. Ampara, 11. Puttalam, 12. Anuradhapura, 13. Polonnaruwa, 14. Badulla 15. Monaragala, 16. Ratnapura

Number admitted for each course of study from each district based on Merit and district quota (specified here as other).

For example if you are in Colombo district, 214 students are selected for Medicine and 77 are selected on Merit and 77 are selected on district basis (other).

  1. sir, in this year there are 1470 seats for medical faculties. but there was only 1310 last year.according to this… what will happen to district and merit cotas ? how about anuradhapura had 37 district cotas last year … can i expect 39 or 40 this year?

  7. Hi my result is 2A B in bio stream.Im from kurunegale. My z.score is 1.7572.distric rank is 115 and island rank is 1625.will I get medicine? Can I know how many merit student in kurunegale district?

  8. i got B.C.C resalt at 2017.a/l z.score1.1833 anuradapura district island rank 704 district rank 41 can i enter jayawardana pura or peradeniya campas ( subject bio system technology)

    • Sir,I did my A/L s in bio science stream in 2017 from badulla district and My results is BCS, z core is 0.7295. Will I be selected to the bio science faculty?

  10. Don’t u feel this quota system should not exist? Though I’m 1279 in island as I’m in Colombo I cannot enter med.but they are taking 1470. If it was 100%merit basis I would have entered. This is injustice the nation is loosing will powered Doctors. A country which hasn’t changed its educational system for 45 years.In 1970 all island merit basis exists.

    • you are 100% correct. I became 297 in colombo district from bio stream and 1111 from island. I will not get a chance to enter medicine. This is really injustice.

      • Yes heshan. What can we do? Though we have the qualification we cannot study medicine here. No scholarships also. We have to spend crores to study

    • Yes you are 100% true.even I am affected by this system.I am really worried that no one has taken any measures to change this system for 45 years..at least any scholarships should have been for all the affected students..

  11. Sir, I am in jaffna. I got 3C in Engineering technology stream in 2017 august.

    My district rank is 43. Island rank is 1020 Z score is 1.1714

    Will I enter university sir?
