New Educational reforms of Sri Lanka 2020

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has emphasized the need to reform the country’s education system in order to create a citizen who can optimally contribute to the future world, the economy and development.
President emphasized:

  • University curricula should target job market
  • More focus on Technology and Information Technology

Presidential Task Force on Education

President stresses need for educational reforms that can optimally contribute to future world, economy & development

An Extraordinary Gazette notification was issued with the authorisation of the President, appointing more members to the Presidential Task Force on Education.

Accordingly, the following members have been appointed to the task force.

  1. Prof. Kapila Perera, Secretary to the Ministry of Education
  2. Mrs. K.M.D.S. Jayasekara, Secretary to the State Ministry of Women and Child Development, Pre-Schools and Primary Education, School Infrastructure and Education Services
  3. Dr. M. Upali Sedara, Secretary to the State Ministry of Education Reforms, Open Universities & Distance Learning Promotion
  4. N.H.M. Chithrananda, Secretary to the State Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research and Innovation
  5. S.H. Harischandra, Secretary to the State Ministry of Dhamma Schools, Bhikkhu Education, Piriven & Buddhist Universities
  6. Senior Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, Vice Chancellor, University of Sri Jayewardenepura
  7. Prof. (Ms.) N.R. de Silva, Vice Chancellor of University of Kelaniya
  8. Prof. N.D. Gunawardana, Vice Chancellor of University of Moratuwa
  9. Prof. S. Sri Sathkunaraja, Vice Chancellor of University of Jaffna
  10. Senior Prof. J.M.U.K. Jayasinghe,Vice Chancellor of University of Wayamba

State Ministry for Education Reforms

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed Hon Susil Premajayantha as the State Minister of Education Reforms, Promotion of Open Universities and Distance Learning 

Present situation of Sri Lanka Education and way forward

A workshop was held in September, 2020 and following ideas were highlighted

  • No exams or stress free school based examinations
  • Quality education for all
  • Equal education in all schools for all students (no popular schools)
  • Production of a practical oriented student rather than theory oriented person
  • Semester system to be introduced replacing current three term system
  • More than 1000 national schools to be established
  • Activity based learning
  • Promoting e Learning and providing laptops for all students
